Significant Results in Aviation Crash Cases
Robb & Robb has a proven track record of securing substantial recoveries for families involved in private airplane accidents. These results reflect our ability to handle highly complex aviation claims, confront well-funded defendants, and achieve meaningful outcomes for our clients.
Our notable plane crash recoveries and verdicts include:
- $52.5 Million Recovery. Following the crash of a Twin Otter aircraft that claimed five lives, our representation resulted in a $48 million jury verdict, which was upheld on appeal and increased to a $52.5 million award, an average recovery exceeding $10.5 million per victim.
- $48 Million Jury Verdict. In a wrongful death case arising from the crash of a DeHavilland plane, the jury awarded $48 million in combined compensatory and punitive damages. The verdict stemmed from findings that a defective compressor turbine blade played a central role in the accident.
- $27.5 Million Settlement. On behalf of skydivers killed when an engine failed in flight, this recovery also led to changes in industry manuals, requiring additional inspections of oil transfer tubes by owners, operators, and repair facilities.
- $26 Million Settlement in North Carolina. This settlement, the largest in that state’s wrongful death history, resulted from a Cessna 421 crash shortly after takeoff. Multiple defendants, including manufacturers and service providers, were held accountable for their actions.
These outcomes reflect not only substantial financial recoveries but also our willingness to pursue litigation through trial and appeal when necessary. Many of these results also led to safety and policy changes within the aviation industry, underscoring our firm’s commitment to both justice for families and broader improvements in aviation safety.
The Complexity of Aviation Accident Cases
Airplane and helicopter crash cases involve multiple layers of law and technical analysis. Safety standards, aircraft design and maintenance standards, and industry practices all contribute to determining liability.
Investigations conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) can take months or years to complete, and families are typically not permitted to participate directly in those official reviews. Meanwhile, manufacturers, operators, and insurers are gathering information, defending liability, and shaping narratives that may limit recovery.
Without immediate intervention, vital evidence can disappear, records can be altered or lost, and valuable legal claims can be compromised. Aviation claims require swift action, methodical investigation, and a clear understanding of how to build a compelling legal case from the earliest stages.
